Vice-Admiral Cecil Ponsonby Talbot, D.S.O., Royal Navy (31 August, 1884 – ) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Born in Bangalore, India, the son of a Major.
His first appointment was in H.M.S. Glory on the China Station. He saved the life of an A.B. at Hankow on the Yangtze at some time during this period, and was thanked by the Admiralty.[1]
Talbot was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 November, 1904.[2]
He was appointed to Thames, additional, for submarines on 5 April, 1905. On 14 January, 1907, he was appointed to Mercury for command of submarines.[3]
Lieutenant Talbot was appointed in command of the submarine C 14 on 27 March, 1912.[4]
Talbot was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 November, 1912.[5]
Talbot was appointed in command of the submarine E 6 on 19 March, 1913.[6]
On 17 October, 1913, his appointment to E 6 was renewed and he was also appointed in command of her sister submarine, E 16.[7]
Great War
Talbot was promoted to the rank of Commander on 21 December, 1914.[8]
He was in command of E 16 on 15 September, 1915 when she torpedoed U 45 at 59deg 10' N, 5deg 9' E..[9]
Commander Talbot was appointed in command of the depot ship Ambrose on 19 September, 1918, and placed in command of Ambrose's Flotilla.[10]
Post-War
Talbot was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1919.[11]
Talbot was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 1 July, 1932.[12]
Talbot was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 17 February, 1936 and placed on the Retired List on 11 December. On 1 May, 1937, however, he would be appointed as the Director of Dockyards vice Admiral Addison, and serve in that post through the entire Second World War.[13]
