Three Viper class submarines[1] were completed for the U.S. Navy in 1907. On 17 November, 1911, they would be redesignated the "B" class and given names B-1 through B-3, not to be confused with submarines of Britain's "B" class.

In 1916, all three "B" class boats were stationed in the Philippines in Manila Bay along with six "A" class boats, their crews living aboard their tenders Monadnock and Mohican.[2]
