Vice-Admiral (retired) Robert Woodyear Glennie, C.M.G., (3 November, 1868. – 11 April, 1930) was an officer in the Royal Navy. He was keen in hydrography.

Life & Career

Glennie was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 June, 1890.[1]

He was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1903.[2]

Upon completing his first tenure as Naval Assistant to the Hydrographer on 1 February, 1905, Glennie was appointed in command of Waterwitch. He left her when on 5 March, 1908 she paid off.[3]

On 9 April, 1910, he was appointed in command of the surveying ship Sealark, and he assumed command on 10 May. He left her three years later when she paid off on 9 May, 1913 and was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1913.[4]

On 13 August, 1914, he was appointed to Bermuda Dockyard by the Rear-Admiral, with advisory powers only. In September, this unusual posting ended and he was recalled to Britain, arriving home on 17 September in Calgarian. In late October, he was appointed in command of the second class protected cruiser Charybdis. On 9 February, 1915, he was appointed in command of the armed merchant cruiser Marmora.[5]

Glennie left Marmora when he was appointed to command Glory on 20 July, 1916. He would be awarded a C.M.G. for his services in her command.[6]

Glennie was appointed Director of the Naval [illeg] Section of the Hydrographic Department on 11 January, 1917.[7]

In late 1918, he was working with the Air Ministry in matters regarding meteorology.[8]

Post-War

Glennie was appointed in command of the Mutine on 15 January, 1919 and commissioned her at Bermuda that June 1st.[9]

Glennie left Bermuda's Fort Hamilton on 11 June, 1921, connecting to Britain through New York on Carmania on the 15th.[10]

Glennie was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 3 August, 1923 and placed on the Retired List the next day on his own request.[11]

Glennie was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 5 April, 1928.[12]

An admission to Haslar Hospital in early 1930 resulted in a diagnosis of colon cancer on 29 January. He underwent surgery, but was never discharged before his death on 11 April, 1930. Glennie was buried in Haslar Cemetery on 15 April in grave 5 row 3, plot D.[13]
