H.M.S. C 31 was one of thirty-eight "C" class coastal submarines completed for the Royal Navy.
Service
In the Test Mobilization, she was one of seven "C" class boats comprising the Fourth Submarine Flotilla.
Captains
Dates of appointment are provided when known.
- Lieutenant Thomas C. B. Harbottle, 1 November, 1909[5] – 9 August, 1910
- Lieutenant-Commander Kenneth J. Duff-Dunbar, 1 August, 1910[6] – 14 November, 1912[7]
- Lieutenant in Command George Pilkington, 14 November, 1912[8] – early January, 1915[9] (presumed killed when vessel lost)
A Navy List shows Duff-Dunbar in command of this boat from 1 November, 1909, but this seems to contradict Service Records for both he and Harbottle.[10]
