Commander (retired) Maximilian Carden Despard, D.S.C., R.N. (30 March, 1892 – ) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
The son of Captain H. J. Despard, the Chief Constable of Lanarkshire.
Despard was promoted to Sub-Lieutenant on 15 December, 1912.[1]
Despard was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 September, 1914. He was appointed to H.M.S. Broke as gunnery officer on 24 March 1917. He was awarded a D.S.C. for his work as gunnery officer in the ship, controlling gunfire and giving orders which resulted in an enemy destroyer being torpedoed on the night of 20-21 April, 1917.[2]
Despard was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 September, 1922.[3]
Placed on the Retired List as medically unfit on 20 June, 1928, Despard was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 March, 1932.[4]
