Vice-Admiral Argentine Hugh Alington, Royal Navy, Retired (10 July, 1876 – 25 March, 1945) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Alington was born in Aberdeen on 10 July, 1876, the son of a Captain in the Royal Navy.[1]

Alington succesfully took his entrance examinations for Britannia for the July 1890 intake term and obtained 1194 marks,[2] but his service record indicates that he entered with the term of January, 1891.[3]

Alington was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 June, 1899.[4]

Alington was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1910.[5]

Great War

Alington was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1916.[6]

On 6 August, 1918, Alington was appointed in command of the light cruiser Dragon.[7]

Post-War

On 10 August, 1920, Alington was made captain of Glorious as she was serving as a turret drill ship in Devonport.[8]

In September 1922, Alington assumed command of the cruiser Hawkins.

He would be mentioned in Foreign office reports on 28 January, 1924 for his services in the aftermath of the Japanese earthquake.[9]

Alington was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 1 August, 1927, vice Royds, and was placed on the Retired List on 2 August.[10]

Alington was promoted to Vice-Admiral on the Retired List on 15 February, 1932.[11]

Alington died of myocarditis on 25 March, 1945.[12]
