Commander (retired) John Kenneth Beaufoy Birch, R.N. (29 August, 1880 – 14 August, 1940) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Born in Liverpool, the son of J. Grant Birch, Esq..[1]

Birch was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 December, 1902.[2][3]

Birch was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 31 December, 1910.[4][5]

Birch was appointed as gunnery officer and as an interpreter to the armoured cruiser Duke of Edinburgh on 3 March, 1914[6] and fought in her at the Battle of Jutland of the First Cruiser Squadron.[7]

Birch was appointed as gunnery officer and as an interpreter to the light cruiser Dartmouth on 14 September, 1917 and served through at least the end of the war.[8][9]

Birch was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 28 July, 1920 and was promoted to the rank of Commander on 29 August, 1920.[10]

World War II

Birch was appointed in command of the yacht Rion on 14 July, 1940. Birch was admitted to Royal Naval Hospital Haslar for a wound in his left chest on 8 August 1940. He died on 14 August.[11]
