Commander (retired) Archibald Gray Buchanan, (24 March, 1898 – ) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
The son of W. A. Buchanan, East India Merchant.[1]
After a year in Prince George, Buchanan fought at the Battle of Jutland in H.M.S. Malaya of the Fifth Battle Squadron. Later in the war, he would serve in P50 and in the submarine C 18.[2]
Buchanan was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 February, 1919.[3]
In 1926, it was reported that he was not of temperate habits, though he had never been unready for service due to alcohol.
Buchanan was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 February, 1927. He was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 15 July, 1927.[4]
After being removed from the Navy List in 1936 due to a failure to report, Buchanan was replaced on the List and promoted to the rank of Commander on 24 March, 1938.[5]
World War II
In late 1939, he very briefly commanded No. 24 Group A/S trawlers, vice Bowlby.
He was reverted to the Retired List on 9 January, 1940.[6]
