Vice-Admiral Alfred Francis Blakeney Carpenter, V.C. (17 September, 1881 – 27 December, 1955) was an officer of the Royal Navy during the First World War.
Life & Career
He was promoted to Lieutenant on 30 June, 1903.[1]
In 1909, Carpenter received the appreciation of the Admiralty for inventing a plotting mechanism which was nonetheless not adopted for use. In December, 1910, he was thanked for inventing an instrument for finding course and speed of an enemy and for correcting the rate.[2]
Carpenter was promoted to Lieutenant-Commander on 30 June, 1911.[3]
In 1913, Carpenter was awarded the Royal Humane Society's Bronze Medal for saving life from drowning.[4]
Carpenter was promoted to Commander on 30 June, 1915.[5]
Carpenter commanded the second class protected cruiser Vindictive for the raid on Zeebrugge, and was awarded the Victoria Cross for conspicuous gallantry.
He was specially promoted to Captain on 23 April, 1918 thanks to his work in the Zeebrugge operation.[6]
In April 1921, he was appointed in command of the light cruiser Carysfort.
In May 1928, he assumed command of the battleship Marlborough.

Carpenter was promoted to Rear-Admiral on 3 August, 1929.[7]
He was promoted to Vice-Admiral on the Retired List on 31 July, 1934.[8]
