Lieutenant Vivian Ormsby Lloyd Champion de Crespigny, (7 December, 1863 – 14 March, 1899) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Born in Wivenhoe, Essex, the son of Reverend F. Champion de Crespigny, Vivian passed out of Britannia with no gain in seniority noted, to join the ironclad battleship Minotaur.[1]

Champion de Crespigny was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in December, 1886.[2]

On 28 April, 1887, Champion de Crespigny was appointed to Mutine on the China Station and succeeded in joining the ship on such short notice that the Admiralty saw fit to express their approbation. In May of 1889, he was invalided after a fever. He was finally found fit on 2 October 1889, but was to be assigned to some place with a more temperate climate.[3]

On 27 December 1895, Champion de Crespigny was to go out to the Australia Station in H.M.S. Endymion. Once out there, he was appointed in command of Lizard for manoeuvres. This command proved longer that simply the manoeuvres, but while his inspections were good, he mismanaged his ship's accounts and was informed that his standing in promotion lists would suffer as a result.[4]

Champion de Crespigny was appointed in command of the torpedo gunboat Hussar on 19 July 1898 and assumed command on 21 August. He received a satisfactory inspection report in February 1899 but his death on 14 March was reported to the Admiralty by telegram from the Mediterranean.[5]
