Commander (retired) John Claud Cole-Hamilton, R.N. (24 March, 1879 – 23 May, 1951) served in the Royal Navy. His service was hampered by stomach disease.
Life & Career
Cole-Hamilton listed his mother as his guardian when he joined the Navy with the July 1893 intake term at H.M.S. Britannia.[1]
Cole-Hamilton was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 June, 1901.[2]
Cole-Hamilton was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 June, 1909. He was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 26 April, 1910.[3]
A stint in command of the sweeping sloop Sunflower in mid 1915 was curtailed in August by stomach disease which eventually resulted in his being superseded in September. He found himself in intermittent admissions to Haulbowline Hospital.
On 14 August 1919, in recognition of his wartime service, Cole-Hamilton was promoted to the rank of Commander, with seniority of 11 November, 1918.[4]
World War II
He was reported sick on shore in May 1940 while appointed to handle censorship duties at the Central Telegraph Office. In 1941, he was reverted to the Retired List on compassionate grounds.[5]
