Commander (retired) Edmund Mount Haes, D.S.C., R.N. (27 October, 1898 – ) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
The son of A. E. M. Haes, Esq., who worked at the stock exchange.
Haes's first ship was the battleship Prince of Wales, appointed in August, 1914. He served in her until she paid off on 5 April, 1917. Following a course in Torpedo Control in Portsmouth, he was appointed to P75 on 6 May 1917. On 12 September 1917 he was appointed to the battleship Ramillies, in which he remained for the rest of the war.[1]
Haes was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 November, 1919.[2]
Haes was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 November, 1927.[3]
Haes was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1933.[4]
On 23 April, 1936, Fame lost her port bower anchor and one shackle of cable and a court of enquiry resulted in a very modest bit of advice on how to avoid such accidents.[5]
On 29 May 1936, Fame collided with R.F.A. British Light. Haes was held largely to blame.[6]
In 1938 he was lent to the Royal Australian Navy in exchange for Commander R. R. Dowling.[7]
World War II
Admitted to City and County Hospital, Londonderry on 30 November 1941 with abrasions and shock. He was discharged on 11 December.[8]
Haes grounded the sloop H.M.S. Egret on 1 January, 1942. A Board of Enquiry on 1 April resulted in an expression of the Admiralty's displeasure toward Haes.[9]
Haes was placed on the Retired List on account of age on 27 October, 1948 and was granted the War Service Rank of Captain.[10]
