Lieutenant-Commander Richard George Kirby Knowling, (12 June, 1903 – 28 May, 1940) served in the Royal Navy.

As with many men born c. 1899 or later, his Service Records at The National Archives do not reflect activity between 1931 and 1939 or so.

Life & Career

Knowling was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 April, 1926.[1]

Knowling was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 April, 1934.[2]

Knowling commanded the destroyer Kimberley from 20 November 1939 to 1 May, 1940.[3]

Knowling's death was somewhat mysterious, as he simply vanished from H.M.S. Vimy in heavy weather on the night of 27/28 May, 1940. It is presumed that he fell overboard while she manoeuvred.
