Vice-Admiral (retired) James William Rivett-Carnac, C.B., C.B.E., D.S.C., Royal Navy (12 February, 1891 – 9 October, 1970) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Rivett-Carnac entered the Navy as it was transitioning to the new training scheme for cadets and was sent directly to the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth as part of the September 1905 intake term.
Rivett-Carnac was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 1 October, 1912.[1]
Rivett-Carnac would become a rangefinder and fire-control expert in the Grand Fleet, and was thanked by the Admiralty for his early work on these vital aspects of naval warfare in 1913.[2]
He was appointed to the battleship Orion on 4 February, 1914 and fought in her at the Battle of Jutland, leaving the ship on 9 July, 1916. After some time at H.M.S. Excellent, he was appoointed to the battleship Benbow on 9 December, 1916.[3]
Rivett-Carnac was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 1 October, 1920.[4]
Rivett-Carnac was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1926.[5]
Rivett-Carnac was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1934.[6]
World War II
In May 1941, he was convicted in civil court for creating an unnecessary obstruction with a motor vehicle.
Rivett-Carnac was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral 8 July, 1943.[7]
Placed on the Retired List on 25 November, 1946, Rivett-Carnac was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral 3 May, 1947.[8]
