Captain William Wyatt Smythe, R.N., Retired (2 July, 1853 – 12 August, 1931) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Smythe was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 24 May, 1877.
Smythe was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1893.
He was captain of the gunvessel Linnet from February 1898 to July 1901. He was found to be free of fault when she touched ground when under the charge of a pilot when transitting from Nankin to Hankow, but on 3 November 1900 she grounded in [illeg] Channel and he was told he had been injudicious in some manner.
Smythe was placed on the Retired List at his own request with the rank of Captain on 30 August, 1901. He would die at Priory Cottage, Plympton, Devon from heart failure and pneumonia.
