Rear-Admiral John Bryan Stevenson, C.M.G., R.N. (7 August, 1876 – ) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Born in Toxteth Park, Lancaster, Stevenson passed out of Britannia in July 1892 with ten months' time. His first appointment placed him in the second class battleship Camperdown on the Mediterranean Station, and he was aboard when she rammed and sank the flagship Victoria. He was ordered home on 15 January, 1895.
Stevenson was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 14 March, 1898.
Stevenson was appointed as captain of the tender Empress from 21 July 1906 to 10 January, 1907. She was later renamed H.M.S. Heron.
Appointed as torpedo and first officer in Albemarle on 25 August, 1908, Stevenson broke her anchor in 1910 through what was judged an error in judgment on his part for failing to clear anchor before heaving it up for housing.
Stevenson was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1910.
In June 1912, he was lent to the Australian Government for one year. He contributed to good Battle Practice in Encounter and his loan to Australia was extended a further two years.
Appointerd in command of Cerberus from 18 January, 1915 to 1 November, 1916 when he was appointed in command of the second class protected cruiser Encounter.
Placed on the Retired List on 5 May, 1919, Stevenson was promoted to the rank of Captain, retired, on 7 August, 1921. He retired from the R.A.N. exactly one decade later, being granted the rank of Rear-Admiral, R.A.N. as he did so.
