Commander (retired) Sydney Harold Tennyson (24 July, 1877 – 23 March, 1950) served in the Royal Navy. Prior to a letter of 18 November 1897, the Navy had his first name as "Sidney".
Life & Career
The son of a Captain J. Tennyson.
Tennyson was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 December, 1899.
On 31 October 1901, Tennyson jumped into the sea off Yarmouth from the third class protected cruiser Pactolus to rescue a man who had been dragged from his boat by a rope from Pactolus. Though a six knot tide prevented Tennyson from reaching the man, who was saved by virtue of having held onto the rope, he was awarded a medal from the Royal Humane Society.[1]
Tennyson was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 31 December, 1907.
Tennyson was promoted to the rank of Acting Commander on 7 April, 1915.
Tennyson was placed on the Retired List at his own request at the rank of Commander on 3 March, 1922.
