Commander (retired) Thomas Campbell MacGill, (29 April, 1886 – 11 January, 1953) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
The son of Captain (eventually, Admiral) Thomas MacGill, R.N..[1]
MacGill was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 1 October, 1908.[2]
At some point around here, MacGill was faulted in a collision between T.B. 072 and T.B. 066. This may have been while he was in command of T.B. 053, 1910-1911.[3]
On 10 March, 1914, he was appointed to the Sharpshooter Class torpedo gunboat Skipjack as first officer, serving under Commander Lionel G. Preston.[4]
His time in Skipjack continued into the War, and she was soon serving as a flagship for the Mine Sweeping Flotilla. On 30 April 1915 he was appointed to the sweeping sloop Acacia, to assist in her completion for service, at which time was placed in command.[5]
MacGill was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 1 October, 1916.[6] On 3 August, 1917, he was appointed to President as part of the staff of the Mine Sweeping Division.[7]
On 6 September, 1919, MacGill was appointed to Egmont for work in Malta, possibly working to coordinate with the Royal Naval Reserve.[8]
Suffering from neurasthenia, MacGill was placed on the Retired List as medically unfit on 22 September, 1922. He was promoted to the rank of Commander on 29 April, 1926.[9]
