Von Ingenohl commanded the H.S.F. in early raids intended to entice a strong, but not overly strong, response from the [[Grand Fleet]] in the hopes that a German force covering the raid might be able to surprise the British reaction force and defeat a large enough portion of the enemy fleet that parity might be achieved.
 
The disasterous [[Battle of Dogger Bank]] resulted when one such operation was compromised by British intercepts of German signals.  In the aftermath, von Ingenohl was replaced in command of the H.S.F. by [[Hugo von Pohl]].

Admiral Gustav Heinrich Ernst Friedrich von Ingenohl (30 June, 1857 – 19 December, 1933) was an officer of the Kaiserliche Marine in the First World War, and was the first war-time commander of the High Sea Fleet.

Life & Career

Von Ingenohl commanded the H.S.F. in early raids intended to entice a strong, but not overly strong, response from the Grand Fleet in the hopes that a German force covering the raid might be able to surprise the British reaction force and defeat a large enough portion of the enemy fleet that parity might be achieved.

The disasterous Battle of Dogger Bank resulted when one such operation was compromised by British intercepts of German signals. In the aftermath, von Ingenohl was replaced in command of the H.S.F. by Hugo von Pohl.
