H.M. T.B. 53 (1885) | |
---|---|
Builder: | John I. Thornycroft & Company[1] |
Ordered: | 30 April/1 May, 1885 |
Launched: | 16 September, 1886[2] |
Sold: | 1913[3] |
H.M. T.B. 53 was one of 53 first-class torpedo boats of the 125 Footer class.
Construction & Service
As the boat ran in Plymouth Sound to train stokers on 4 May 1893, two men were badly scalded when a securing bolt broke and permitted the outflow of steam despite only ordinary running being undertaken at the time.[4]
She commissioned on 18 July to participate in the Annual Manoeuvres of 1894 as leader of the three T.Bs. of the Torpedo Division 1 of the Red Side.[5]
In 1895, she was one of thirteen torpedo boats of 125 feet or greater length and four smaller ones stationed in Devonport.[6]
Around 1906-1907, with the issuance of torpedo boat numbers to the first of the Cricket class torpedo boats, the existing Torpedo Boats numbered 25 to 79 had a "0" prepended to their number. This vessel, therefore, became T.B. 053.[7]
