Aubrey Thomas Tillard

Rear-Admiral Aubrey Thomas Tillard, K.B.E., D.S.O. (10 April, 1881 – 12 December, 1952) was an officer in the Royal Navy who was to hold a considerable number of seagoing command positions.

Life & Career

Tillard was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 March, 1903.[1]

Tillard was appointed in command of the destroyer Larne on 28 January, 1911.[2]

Tillard was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 31 March, 1911.[3]

Tillard commanded the destroyer Firedrake after Alfred B. Watts, some time after mid-1914 and prior to late 1917.[4]

Tillard was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1914.[5]

Post-war

Tillard was appointed in command of the flotilla leader Valentine on 17 January, 1919.[6] On 5 February, 1919, a Court of Inquiry faulted him for damaging his ship while coming alongside Verdun.[7]

Tillard was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1920.[8]

He was appointed in command of the light cruiser Castor in August, 1922.

In 1924, he was appointed in command of H.M.S. Malabar, the shore establishment in Bermuda, and as Captain in Charge of Naval Establishments, Bermuda. In November, he was placed in charge of the Dockyard. He was discharged on 18 November, 1926. This association with Malabar and Bermuda would be refreshed in the Second World War.[9]

In April, 1928, Tillard was appointed in command of the light cruiser Carysfort.

Tillard was appointed in command of the battleship Centurion on November, 1929.

He was promoted to Rear-Admiral on 16 October, 1932 and placed on the Retired List the following day in accordance with Order in Council of 9 March, 1914.[10]

World War II

On 28 August, 1939, Tillard was appointed to Malabar as Commodore of Convoy, as Commodore, Second Class, R.N.R.. In 1941, he would be helping with the Liverpool Convoy Pool.[11]
