Captain Markham Henry Evelegh (4 June, 1897 – ) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Evelegh passed out of the Training Establishment in August, 1914 and was appointed, briefly, to the battleship Hannibal before being placed in the more modern battleship Benbow on 7 October. He remained in her through the Battle of Jutland, and on 21 September 1916 was appointed to the destroyer Rifleman.
In 1917 Evelegh was awarded the Royal Humane Society Silver Medal for saving life at sea.
Evelegh was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 June, 1918 and remained in Rifleman until being appointed to the battleship Valiant on 25 July, 1919.
Evelegh was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 June, 1926.
Evelegh was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1932.
World War II
Evelegh was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1939.
Evelegh was appointed in command of the battleship Warspite in December, 1944.
Evelegh was appointed in command of the battleship Duke of York vice Nicholl on 31 July 1946.
On 22 November, 1946 he was appointed in command of the battleship Anson in place of Frederick Secker Bell, who was sick.
