Captain John Henry Jauncey, D.S.O., R.N. (Retired) (14 April, 1889 – 24 September, 1958)[1] was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Jauncy entered the Royal Navy ranked 36th in order of merit of sixty cadets accepted in the May 1904 intake term at H.M.S. Britannia.[2]
Jauncey's first naval appointment was to the heavy cruiser London on 15 September, 1905. He served in her until he was invalided with Mediterranean Fever on 21 July, 1906 and was sent home in the ship Maine, arriving one week later for admittance to Haslar Hospital. He'd be discharged to receive periodic re-surveys, and was found to be fit in October. On 26 October, 1906, he was appointed to the Triumph of the Channel Squadron.[3]
After serving two years in Triumph, Jauncey was sent the battleship Swiftsure, where he stayed until January of 1909.[4]
Jauncey was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 22 June, 1911.[5]
Great War
On 3 December, 1916, a French destroyer collided with Teviot. Jauncey, then in command of the patrol boat P12, was thanked by the French Minister of Marine for his services in saving lives of French sailors on this occasion.[6]
Jauncey was hospitalised for an unknown period with German measles on 18 February, 1917.[7]
Jauncey was appointed in command of the destroyer Searcher on 5 November, 1918.[8]
Post-War
Jauncey was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 22 June, 1919.[9]
He was appointed in command of the destroyer Tintagel on 17 March, 1920. He grounded her sometime later that year and was told to be more careful in future.[10]
In December, 1920, Jauncey was appointed in command of the destroyer Venturous.[11] Captain Powell gave her a satisfactory inspection report in 1921.[12]
Jauncey was placed on the Retired List at his own request with the rank of Commander on 15 April, 1932.[13]
World War II
Jauncey was appointed in command of the anti-aircraft ship Palomares with the rank of Acting Captain on 30 April, 1941.
“His skill and daring in handling [destroyers] became a byword in the Navy. ... In command of the A.A. ship Palomares he found himself, in July 1942, Senior Officer of the the escort of the ill-fated convoy PQ.17, which had been ordered to scatter and as a result was nearly annihilated. With dogged tenacity he managed to collect and shepherd the few forlorn survivors and by hiding these in the Matoshkin Strait in Nova Zembla ultimately brought them to safety in Archangel. For this he was awarded his first D.S.O.[14] Subsequently he and his ship were transferred to the Mediterranean and were called upon to support the North African and Salerno landings. In the former the gallant Palomares was bombed with heavy casualties, was on fire for five hours and lost her stern; yet her indefatigable Captain brought her limping into the safety of Algiers. As soon as refitted she was back again in action giving A.A. cover for the American landings at Salerno, during which she struck a mine. Her Captain again brought her safely to harbour. For these exploits he was awarded his second D.S.O.”[15] [16]
Jauncey served as Captain (D) of Greenock vice Davis very briefly in 1944, being captain of M.T.J. Orlando. September 1945 saw an appointment in command of Forte and as Assistant District Shipyard Controller, Falmouth District, vice McCrum.[17]
On his release from the Fleet in October 1946, and reversion to the Retired List, he was granted the War Service Rank of Captain.[18]
