Captain (retired) Melville Adams Hawes (12 December, 1886 – ) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Born in Shanghai and raised by merchant uncle C. E. Hawes, Melville was destined to become an interpreter in German and a gunnery specialist.[1]

He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 March, 1907.[2]

He served in Venerable as gunnery officer and German interpreter from 8 January, 1913 to 6 January, 1914 and moved directly to Colossus.

He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 March, 1915.[3]

He continued to serve in Colossus until 11 January, 1918 and finished the war assigned to the Operations Division.[4]

Hawes was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1919.[5]

He married Dorothy Stanhope Hobart Kay on 31 January, 1920 and ceased work at the Operations Division on 1 October, 1920.

Service in Barham, Dunedin, Chatham, Southampton and Calcutta took him into 1924. He then switched to work in the Naval Intelligence Division and remained there until 1933.[6]

Hawes was placed on the Retired List with the rank of Captain on 26 June, 1934.[7]

Hawes was still alive and doing work with the Navy into 1945, but September of that year featured a stay in Royal Naval Hospital, Chatham for Bell's Palsy.[8]
