Rear-Admiral (retired) Francis Reginald Purvis, (18 January, 1833 – 10 January, 1895) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Purvis was a descendant of Francis William Austen, one of Jane Austen's "sailor brothers".[1]

Purvis was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 12 June, 1852.[2]

On 5 November, 1855 he was gazetted for being slightly wounded during the naval attack on Sebastopol.[3]

On 10 September, 1859 he was gazetted for being slightly wounded in the "unsuccessful but gallant attack on the forts at the mouth of the bay."[4]

Purvis was promoted to the rank of Commander on 6 August, 1860. In May 1864, the French Government thanked him for rendering services to a transport.[5]

Purvis was promoted to the rank of Captain on 11 April, 1866.[6]

He retired on 1 October, 1873 and was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 17 February, 1884.[7]

He died at Newton Abbot on 10 January, 1895.[8]
