Admiral Michael Pelham O'Callaghan, C.B., C.V.O., Royal Navy, Retired (15 December, 1850 – 9 June, 1937) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Michael Pelham O'Callaghan was born on 15 December, 1850, the son of Captain (later Admiral) George William Douglas O'Callaghan. He was appointed to the training ship Britannia on 1 October, 1864, leaving with a Third Class Certificate on 18 December, 1865. He was immediately appointed to the screw frigate Doris. On 19 December, 1866, he was rated Midshipman.

O'Callaghan was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1884.[1]

O'Callaghan was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1891.[2]

In recognition of his services in Benin he was appointed an Ordinary Member of the Third Class, or Companion, in the Military Division of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath (C.B.) on 25 May, 1897.[3]

From 30 March to 22 September, 1898, he was appointed to President as Captain of the Royal Naval College, Greenwich. On 23 September he was appointed in command of the Royal Sovereign.[Citation needed]

On 13 March, 1900, he was appointed Captain of the training ship Britannia.

He took command of the pre-dreadnought Exmouth on 2 June, 1903, and paid her off on 17 May, 1904.[4]

Flag Rank

O'Callaghan was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 16 June, 1904, vice Drury.[5] In accordance with the provisions of the Order in Council of 8 December, 1903, he was placed on the Retired List on 16 December, 1907.[6]

O'Callaghan was advanced to the rank of Vice-Admiral on the Retired List on 30 June, 1908,[7] and to the rank of Admiral on the Retired List on 13 July, 1912.[8]
