Vice-Admiral (retired) Ernest John Spooner, D.S.O., R.N. (22 August, 1887 – 15 April, 1942) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Born in Winchester.
Spooner was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 January, 1909.
Spooner was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 January, 1917.
Post-War
Spooner was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1922.
Spooner was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1930.
Spooner was appointed in command of the battlecruiser Repulse in December, 1938.
World War II
Spooner was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 25 June, 1940.
Spooner was appointed as Rear-Admiral, Malaya in 1941 and was declared missing in action following a pell mell retreat from the Japanese.
Spooner was placed on the Retired List and promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral (retired) on 22 October, 1943.
Spooner was declared to have died on 15 April, 1942. He had been forced ashore from a motor launch which had been strafed and died of privation on an island.
