Captain Henry Berwick Crane, C.B.E., R.N. (19 June, 1894 – ) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
The son of Charles Arnold Crane, Esq., gentleman gained one month's time on passing out of the Training Establishment on 15 January, 1912 and becoming a Midshipman.
He spent four months in Queen and then nearly two years in Zealandia, ending on 21 April, 1914. In July 1913, he was in Gibraltar Hospital awaiting an abdominal operation.
At the outbreak of war, he was in Britannia, leaving her on 2 November, 1914 when he was appointed to the first-class torpedo boat T.B. 11.
Crane served in Medea from 25 May 1915 until he was sent to Dolphin for instruction in submarines on 15 September.
Crane was granted his watchkeeping certificate in October 1915. He served in C 18 from 3 November 1915 until being sent to work in submarines tended by Titania on 1 April 1916.
Crane was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 August, 1916, which was later adjusted to 15 May, 1916.
Crane was appointed in command of the submarine H 44 on 4 November, 1920.[1]
Crane was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 May, 1924.
Crane was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1929.
Crane was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1937.
World War II
In 1939, he was to loaned to the Royal Australian Navy for command of Cerberus.
In January 1941 he was to receive another abdominal operation before he could return to sea. He was to be fit on 5 April.
Placed on the Retired List 5 July, 1946.
