H.M.S. Achates was one of eleven "A" Class destroyers completed for the Royal Navy.
Service
Captain Miles was appointed in command of the light cruiser Comus in August, 1929, and while acting as Captain (D) of the Third Destroyer Flotilla, in command of "A" class destroyers Codrington, Acasta, and Active in 1930 through 1932. Achates was commissioned at Clydebank on 31 March, 1930.[1]
On 4 April, 1932, Active and Achates collided and Their Lordships informed Miles that "he must be held very seriously to blame for a grave error of judgment."[2]
She re-commissioned at Portsmouth on 18 October, 1932 for service with the Third Destroyer Flotilla in the Mediterranean.[3]
Re-commissioned at Devonport on 23 July, 1935.[4]
