George Herbert Knowles

Rear-Admiral George Herbert Knowles, D.S.O. (20 November, 1881 – ) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Knowles was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 December, 1903.

Knowles was appointed Lieutenant & Commander of the destroyer Racehorse on 24 January, 1910.

Knowles was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 31 December, 1911.

Great War

Knowles was appointed in command of the destroyer Lydiard on 27 October, 1914.

Knowles was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1915.

He was appointed in command of the flotilla leader Grenville on 22 March, 1918.

Post-War

Knowles was appointed in command of the flotilla leader Douglas on 9 July, 1920.

Knowles was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1921.

In May, 1924, Knowles was appointed in command of the light cruiser Capetown.

In 1932, an A.B. was killed in a boat handling accident aboard Cornwall. Knowles was found to have been negligent in part.

Knowles was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 10 October, 1933 and was placed on the Retired List the following day.
