Commander John Henry Jauncey, D.S.O., R.N. (14 April, 1889 – ) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Jauncy entered the Royal Navy ranked 36th in order of merit of sixty cadets accepted in the May 1904 intake term at H.M.S. Britannia.[1]
Jauncey's first naval appointment was to the heavy cruiser London on 15 September, 1905. He served in her until he was invalided with Mediterranean Fever on 21 July, 1906 and was sent home in the ship Maine, arriving one week later for admittance to Haslar Hospital. He'd be discharged to receive periodic re-surveys, and was found to be fit in October. On 26 October, 1906, he was appointed to the Triumph of the Channel Squadron.[2]
After serving two years in Triumph, Jauncey was sent the battleship Swiftsure, where he stayed until January of 1909.[3]
Jauncey was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 22 June, 1911.[4]
Great War
On 3 December, 1916, a French destroyer collided with Teviot. Jauncey was thanked by the French Minister of Marine for his services in saving lives of French sailors on this occasion.[5]
Jauncey was hospitalised for an unknown period with German measles on 18 February, 1917.[6]
Jauncey was appointed in command of the destroyer Searcher on 5 November, 1918.[7]
Post-War
Jauncey was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 22 June, 1919.[8]
He was appointed in command of the destroyer Tintagel on 17 March, 1920. He grounded her sometime later that year and was told to be more careful in future.[9]
In December, 1920, Jauncey was appointed in command of the destroyer Venturous.[10] Captain Powell gave her a satisfactory inspection report in 1921.[11]
Jauncey was placed on the Retired List at his own request with the rank of Commander on 15 April, 1932.[12]
World War II
Jauncey was appointed in command of the anti-aircraft ship Palomares with the rank of Acting Captain on 30 April, 1941.
Jauncey was awarded the D.S.O. for bravery and resolution while taking a convoy to Northern Russia in the face of relentless attacks by enemy aircraft and submarines, gazetted 26 January, 1943. A bar was added to his D.S.O. in 1944 for his courage and devotion to duty in the landings at Salerno.[13]
Jauncey served as Captain (D) of Greenock vice Davis very briefly in 1944, being captain of M.T.J. Orlando. September 1945 saw an appointment in command of Forte and as Assistant District Shipyard Controller, Falmouth District, vice McCrum.[14]
