Lieutenant-Commander (retired) George Wilford Manson, (7 October, 1899 – ) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Manson was the son of J. Manson, Civil Engineer. He passed out of the Training Establishment on 1 September 1915 and was appointed to the battleship Hercules one week later. He would see action in her at the Battle of Jutland, and leave her on 28 January, 1918 when he was appointed to H.M.S. Excellent for a gunnery course for T.B.Ds.. This was immediately followed by a Torpedo Control Course at Vernon in February, but he failed to qualify.[1]

In 1918, Manson served in Verulam and Southampton.[2]

Manson was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 May, 1920. He served as third officer in both H 48 and H 52 in 1921, but he was not proving himself. In late 1921, Commander (S) reported to Rear-Admiral (S) that "Manson has plenty of ability but is very lazy indeed..." Accordingly, he was discharged from submarine service on 4 January, 1922 and was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 22 August, 1922.[3]

Manson was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 May, 1928.[4]
