Frederick Armand Powlett
Admiral Frederick Armand Powlett, C.B.E., Royal Navy, Retired (27 July, 1873 – 1963) was an officer of the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Powlett was mentioned in Seymour's despatch after the relief attempt:
Lieutenant Frederick A. Powlett, my Flag Lieutenant, was with me throughout the expedition, towards Peking, and since. He has been most useful at Tientsin, in addition to his other duties, in arranging the signals and communications with the tower and our batteries for firing on the Chinese guns, also in trying to surprise and capture Chinese signallers at night.[1]
On 19 October, 1905, Powlett married Nora Chaplin, daughter of the late Ernest Chaplin, barrister, in Clifton Parish Church.
Powlett was promoted to the rank of Captain on 19 October, 1909.
In July 1911, he was appointed in command of the destroyer Isis.[2]
On 5 December 1912, he was appointed captain of the light cruiser Newcastle out of the China Station[3]
Powlett was appointed as captain of the battleship Albion in July, 1916.[4]
On 25 October 1916, he was appointed as Flag Captain in Wallington, which was part of Immingham Depot.[5]
Post-War
Powlett served as captain of Collingwood from December 1918 through the following March.[6]
He was appointed to command the battleship St. Vincent on 18 March, 1919.[7] On 27 June he was appointed a Commander of the Military Division of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (C.B.E.) for "valuable services as Chief of Staff to the Vice-Admiral Commanding, East Coast of England."[8]
He was appointed command of Thunderer on 13 August, 1919.[9]
Powlett was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 7 October, 1920, vice Culme-Seymour, [10] and was placed on the Retired List on 8 October.[11] He was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on the Retired List on 1 March, 1926.[12]
