Captain (retired) Herbert Coates Mayo, O.B.E. (15 November, 1881 – 31 December, 1939) served in the Royal Navy and Royal Naval Reserve.

Life & Career

Mayo entered the Navy in the rank of Lieutenant on 1 April, 1913.

Mayo served in the battlecruiser H.M.S. Princess Royal from 25 April, 1913 through 30 August, 1918.

He was specially promoted to Commander from the Supplementary List on 14 March, 1924. In September 1926 he was evaluated, and it was noted that he'd been working in the Boom Defence Section and had shown himself to be a fine seaman during boom trials. Possessed of a "tactful and pleasant personality", his "speech and bearing are not quite those of a born courtier."

Mayo was placed on the Retired List with the rank of Captain on 15 November, 1931. He died at the end of 1939, having had a colostomy performed on him in April of that year.
