H.M.S. Campania was a former Cunard liner purchased when sent to the breakers and converted to a seaplane carrier for the Royal Navy.
She was to accompanied the Grand Fleet when it sortied to fight the Battle of Jutland, but started off two and a half hours late. Mindful of the submarine threat faced by an unescorted vessel, Jellicoe ordered her to return to Scapa Flow.
