Captain Edward Unwin, V.C., C.B., C.M.G., R.N., Retired (17 March, 1864 – 19 April, 1950) was an officer of the Royal Navy who was awarded the Victoria Cross for bravery displayed at Gallipoli in 1915.
Life & Career
Unwin was born on 17 March, 1864, the son of Edward Wilberforce Unwin, J.P., of Forest Lodge, Fawley, Hampshire. He went to sea in the mercantile marine before joining the Royal Navy as a probationary Lieutenant on the Supplementary List on 31 October, 1895. He underwent short courses in gunnery and torpedo at the Excellent and Vernon before joining the Theseus on 14 January, 1896. On 20 January, 1897, he was confirmed in the rank of Lieutenant and on 19 July was appointed to the battleship Thunderer.
On 17 March, 1909, Unwin was placed on the Retired List with the rank of Commander, having reached the retirement age for Lieutenants of 45.
In November, 1919, he was promoted to the rank of Captain on the Retired List with seniority of 11 November, 1918.[1]
