Admiral Herbert Lyon, C.B., Royal Navy, Retired (28 December, 1856 – 6 March, 1919) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Early Life & Career

Lyon was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant with seniority of 7 February, 1880.[1]

Lyon was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1894.[2]

Captain

Lyon was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1900.[3]

In December 1905, he became Captain of the armoured cruiser Bedford, remaining about three months.[4] In March 1906 he was appointed in command of the heavy cruiser Cornwall.[5]

He served as captain of Formidable from January 1907 until some time in 1908.[6]

Lyon was appointed to the Tamar as Commodore, Second Class and naval officer in charge at Hong Kong on 18 August, 1908.[7] He was appointed a Naval Aide-de-Camp to the King dated 5 November, vice Slade.[8]

Retirement

He was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral dated 14 April, 1910.[9] In accordance with the provisions of the Order in Council of 8 December, 1903, Lyon was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 25 January, 1913.[10] He was advanced to the rank of Vice-Admiral on the Retired List on 24 October, 1915.[11]

On the occasion of the King's birthday he was appointed an Additional Member of the Third Class, or Companion, in the Civil Division of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath (C.B.) on 3 June, 1918.[12]

He was advanced to the rank of Admiral on the Retired List on 1 January, 1919.[13]
