Vice-Admiral SIR Sydney Moffat Raw, K.B.E., C.B., R.N. (19 August, 1898 – ) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

The son of Dr. N. Raw of Liverpool, Raw passed out of the Training Establishment in August 1914. Passing swiftly through short appointments in Good Hope and Nottingham, Raw was appointed to Tiger as a Midshipman on 8 October, 1914.[1] He stayed in her throughout the war, fighting at the Battle of Jutland.

Raw was made an acting Sub-Lieutenant on 15 January, 1917. He left Tiger for an appointment in the sweeping sloop Geranium on 22 March.

On 15 September, 1917, he was promoted to the rank of Sub-Lieutenant. In May 1918 as he completed fourteen months in Geranium, Raw applied for the submarine service. On 8 July, he went to Dolphin for instruction in submarines.

Post-War

After fighting a full war, Raw obtained his watchkeeping certificate on 20 November, 1918.

Raw was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 April, 1919.

Raw was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 April, 1927.

Raw was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1933.

World War II

Raw was promoted to the rank of Acting Captain on 23 November, 1939.

Raw was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1940.

Raw was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 8 July, 1949.

Raw was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 15 August, 1952.

Raw was placed on the Retired List on 26 August, 1954.
