Herbert Arthur Buchanan-Wollaston
Vice-Admiral Herbert Arthur Buchanan-Wollaston, C.M.G., Royal Navy, Retired (13 October, 1878 – ) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Herbert Arthur Buchanan Wollaston was born in Kensington, London, the son of S. G. Wollaston, Esquire. He changed his name by hyphenating the last two names in June, 1903.[1]
Buchanan-Wollaston was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 January, 1899.[2]
Buchanan-Wollaston was promoted to the rank of Commander on 22 June, 1911.[3] He was appointed to Cornwall as executive officer on 5 January, 1912 and was mentioned in despatches for his service during the Battle of the Falklands. He was to remain in Cornwall until 25 April, 1917, when he was appointed to Cyclops, additional, for special service on the staff of Vice-Admiral Commanding, Orkneys and Shetlands, Frederic E. E. Brock.[4]
Buchanan-Wollaston was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1917 and discharged from his staff assignment on 24 October, 1917 when he was appointed captain of the second class protected cruiser Fox. He would finished out the war in her, and quit the ship in March, 1919.[5]
Post-War
Buchanan-Wollaston took Cæsar back to Devonport and paid her off in April, 1920 before starting studies at the Senior Officers' War Course at Greenwich from 7 March, 1921. He remained at Greenwich until being appointed in command of the light cruiser Calypso of the Third Light Cruiser Squadron in September, 1921.[6]
In July, 1927, he was appointed in command of the light cruiser Carysfort.
Buchanan-Wollaston was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 6 April, 1928 and placed on the Retired List on the 7th.[7]
Buchanan-Wollaston was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral 31 December, 1932.[8]
