H.M.S. Tay was one of twelve Medina Class flatiron gunboats completed for the Royal Navy.
Service
Lt. John Coughlan was appointed in command of Tay on 10 March, 1904 to participate in the Jubilee Review. In June, Tay collided with a smack due to what a Court of Enquiry deemed a "want of judgment" on Coughlan's part. Having been diagnosed with neurasthenia at Plymouth Hospital, Coughlan was retired as unfit on 20 September, 1904.
