Captain (retired) Henry Leonard Bethune, C.B.E. (17 October, 1858 – 24 May, 1939) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Bethune was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 June, 1882.

Bethune was placed on the Retired List with permission to assume the rank of Commander on 17 February, 1903. He did not simply retire, however. On 21 June 1904, he was appointed Commander Instructor, being superseded on 31 March, 1908.

Bethune was found largely to blame in the loss of Caribbean on 26 September 1915.

He was appointed in command of the battleship Victorious on 23 November, 1915.[1]

Post-War

Bethune was promoted to the rank of Captain (retired) on 11 November, 1918.
