Stanhope Hawke

Admiral THE HONOURABLE Stanhope Hawke, Royal Navy, Retired (16 April, 1863 – 1 February, 1936) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Early Life & Career

Hawke was born on 16 April, 1863, at Willingham, Lincolnshire, the son of the Reverend Edward Henry Julius Hawke, Rector of WIllingham, and Jane, née Dowker.[1]

Hawke was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 December, 1886.[2]

Hawke was promoted to the rank of Commander on 1 January, 1899.[3]

Captain

Hawke was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1905.[4]

On 7 December, 1906, Hawke was appointed in command of the cruiser Thetis.[5] He was appointed in command of the Charybdis on 25 March, 1907.[6]

He was appointed to command the armoured cruiser Hampshire in December 1909.

He was appointed in command of the armoured cruiser Achilles on 18 April, 1911.[7]

He was appointed in command of the battleship Irresistible on 15 April, 1914.[8]

Great War

He was appointed command of battleship Illustrious on 25 July, 1915.[9]

On 15 March, 1916, he was appointed captain of the battleship Prince George.[10]

He then served as captain of the battleship Albion from 14 December, 1916.[11]

Hawke was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 26 April, 1917.[12] He was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 27 April.[13]

Hawke was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on the Retired List on 6 April, 1922.[14] He was advanced to the rank of Admiral on the Retired List on 25 October, 1926.[15]
