Robert Nelson Ommanney

Admiral SIR Robert Nelson Ommanney, K.B.E., C.B., Royal Navy, Retired (31 January, 1854 – 12 January, 1938) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Ommanney was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 16 April, 1878.[1]

Ommanney was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1893.[2]

Captain

Ommanney was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1899.[3]

He was appointed in command of the first class protected cruiser Andromeda on 1 March 1904.[4]

He commanded the battleship Britannia from August 1906 until September 1907.

Flag Rank

Ommanney was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 1 October, 1908, vice Dicken.[5]

Ommanney was appointed an Ordinary Member of the Third Class, or Companion, in the Civil Division of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath (C.B.) on 1 January, 1913.[6] He was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 15 December, vice Keppel.[7]

Great War

Fisher wrote to Churchill on 23 January, 1915: "We have struck oil in Admiral Ommanney. Oliver tells me he knows more abt handling a Fleet than anyone in the Navy! Why is he not in a Battle Squadron then? Put him in place of Warrender—Warrender to Greenwich—Bayly to Monitors—Jerram to Mines like Ommanney—let those ideas germinate!"[8]

In accordance with the provisions of the Order in Council of 8 December, 1903, Ommanney was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 9 August.[9] He was advanced to the rank of Admiral on the Retired List on 2 July, 1917.[10] He was appointed a Knight Commander of the Military Division of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (K.B.E.) on 1 January, 1919.[11]
