Captain Vincent Lewin Bowring (5 May, 1875 – 23 February, 1951) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Bowring was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 December, 1896.[1]

Bowring was appointed in command of the destroyer Lightning on 30 May, 1903.[2] He was found responsible for a collision with Peterel in 1904. Though he received a favourable inspection of the destroyer in December, 1904, Rear-Admiral (D) offered that he did not consider Bowring "suitable for command of a destroyer" in May of 1905.[3]

In 1908, Bowring received the recommendation of R/A Percy Scott and was praised by Captain Robert John Prendergast for his prompt and seamanlike reaction when a cable parted in Carnarvon, crediting the Lieutenant with thereby avoiding a collision with H.M.S. Devonshire.[4]

Bowring was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1909.[5]

Bowring was appointed in command of the destroyer Violet on 14 August, 1913.[6]

Great War

He was appointed in command of the battleship Agincourt on 25 June, 1919.[7]

Bowring was placed on the Retired List with the rank of Captain on 5 May, 1921.[8]

Bowring died on influenza in 1951.
