Vice-Admiral Vincent Barkly Molteno, C.B., Royal Navy, Retired (30 April 1872 – 12 November 1952) was an officer of the Royal Navy during the First World War.
Early Life & Career
Acting Sub-Lieutenant Molteno was loaned to command the first-class torpedo boat T.B. 25 on 16 July, 1892, for manoeuvres.[1]
He was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1910.
He attended the Royal Navy War College as a captain from 6 March to June, 1911, where he was noted as being First Class, placing third out of ten captains in order of merit. "V.G."
On 1 May, 1912, he was appointed in command of the depot ship St. George.[2]
He was appointed in command of the armoured cruiser Antrim on 19 December, 1913.[3]
Great War
He was appointed in command of the battleship Revenge on 23 July, 1915,[4] shortly before that ship was renamed Redoubtable.
He was appointed in command of the armoured cruiser Warrior on 16 December, 1915,[5] leading her at the Battle of Jutland as part of the First Cruiser Squadron. She was overtaken by flooding after the battle and sank. He was appointed to command the armoured cruiser Minotaur that same December.[6]
He did not have much time to feather his nest in Minotaur, as he was appointed in command of the armoured cruiser Shannon on 5 February, 1917.[7]
