Admiral Algernon Walker-Heneage-Vivian, C.B., M.V.O., Royal Navy, Retired (4 February, 1871 – 26 February, 1952) was an officer of the Royal Navy.
Early Life & Career
Heneage was appointed additional to the ironclad Triumph on 30 August, 1887.[1]
Heneage was confirmed in the rank of Sub-Lieutenant on 14 November, 1890.[2]
He was confirmed in the rank of Lieutenant with seniority of 14 November, 1892.[3]
Heneage was specially promoted to the rank of Commander on 2 May, 1900, for services in South Africa.[4]
He served as commander in Nile, Niobe and Hogue. A rather dismal inspection of Hogue by Rear-Admiral Henderson elicited the comment that the "[d]isorganised state of ship shows that executive officer has no aptitude for his duty." A satisfactory inspection by Curzon-Howe followed, perhaps showing a keener approach being taken.[5]
Heneage was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1906.[6]
He was appointed command of second class protected cruiser Hyacinth on 10 January, 1907.[7]
On 1 February, 1910, Heneage was appointed to the command of H.M.S. Andromache.[8]
Great War
He was appointed in command of Albion on 1 August, 1914.[9]
On 15 June, 1915, he was appointed to Hussar as Captain in Charge of Minesweepers. He was designated a Commodore, Second Class on 16 September 1915 and continued with the sweepers until 5 December, 1916.[10]
Heneage was appointed an Additional Member of the Third Class, or Companion, in the Military Division of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath (C.B.) on 1 January, 1916.[11]
Heneage was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 31 January, 1918, vice Foot.[12] On 9 March he was appointed British Senior Naval Officer, Italy.[13]
Post-War
Heneage was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 29 July, 1920, "in order to facilitate the promotion of younger officers."[14] On 21 July, 1921, he was granted Royal License to alter his name to Algernon Walker-Heneage-Vivian.[15]
Walker-Heneage-Vivian was advanced to the rank of Vice-Admiral on the Retired List on 8 October, 1923,[16] was advanced to the rank of Admiral on the Retired List on 1 August, 1927.[17]
