Commander (retired) Henry Gray Higgins, D.S.O. (27 September, 1888 – ) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Admitted Gibraltar Hospital on 24 July, 1905 with Mediterranean Fever. He was sent home and hospitalised until 3 October. He was again fit on2 February, 1906.

Higgins was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 June, 1909. In August, his name was noted for submarines and later in the year he completed a ten day course with a navigating officer.[1]

Higgins was appointed in command of the submarine A 12 on 4 March, 1913.[2]

Higgins was appointed in command of the submarine C 23 on 30 December, 1913.[3]

Great War

Higgins was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 June, 1917.[4]

He was awarded the D.S.O., invested on 14 November and gazetted on 30 November, 1917 "[i]n recognition of his services , where hw has throughout shown great determination and zeal. Has carried out 9 minelaying operations of which 8 were in the vicinity of enemy's coast or in close proximity to minefields."

On 10 September, 1918, Higgins was superseded in command of E 46 and sent to Dolphin for submarines. On 12 November, 1918, he was ordered to revert to General Service (from Submarine Service) and report to the Second Sea Lord.

Post-War

On 5 May, 1919, Higgins was restored to Submarine Service.

He was appointed in command of the submarine L 1 on 17 September, 1920.[5]

Higgins was appointed to Marshal Soult on 31 October, 1931 vice Stride. He remained there only several weeks, however, as he was placed on the Retired List at his own request upon his discharge with the rank of Commander on 24 November, 1931.[6]

World War II

On 15 April, 1938, Higgins was reported fit for light duties only, due to tuberculous glands in his stomach. He was informed that his services were not required. In June 1941, he was hospitalised, dangerously ill with pleurisy and lung cancer. Though he was discharged on 20 September, 1941, he had new growths developing in his lungs. However, he was still working into 1944 and 1945, despite Lumbago being added to his diagnoses.

In 1949, he was granted permission to travel to France and Switzerland.[7]
