- ↑ The Navy List. (October, 1904). p. 300.
- ↑ Carey service record. The National Archives. ADM 196/42/269. Carey was granted one month's sick leave on 24 January, and was placed on the Retired List on 25 February. This concurs with the date of Vaughan-Lee taking up the appointment. Carey therefore could not have taken up his appointment, contrary to the impression given in Cobb, Preparing for Blockade, 276.
