H.M.S. Sterling was one of sixty-seven "S" class destroyers built for the Royal Navy as the Great War was ending.

She was re-commissioned on 7 February, 1925 for service with the Eighth Destroyer Flotilla of the Atlantic Fleet.[7]
Re-commissioned at the Nore on 7 January, 1927 for service with the Eighth Destroyer Flotilla on the China Station.[8]
Re-commissioned at Hong Kong on 1 October, 1929 for continued service with the Eighth Destroyer Flotilla.[9]
In June of 1933, her bell was one of about 100 surplus bells announced as being for sale at prices ranging from £1 to £10. Preference would be given to those offers from men with a special consideration in the bell in question.[10]
