Captain (retired) Eric Quintin Carter (12 June, 1883 – 30 October, 1938) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Born in Aldershot.

Carter was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 September, 1905.[1]

Carter was appointed to the battlecruiser Invincible on 16 May, 1911, following two and a half years in command of torpedo craft. After a year in her and a brief spell at the Royal Naval Barracks in Portsmouth, Carter was appointed to the new destroyer Christopher, to take command upon her commissioning. She joined the Fourth Destroyer Flotilla, eventually to be operating in support of the Grand Fleet.[2]

Carter was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 September, 1913.[3]

Great War

Carter remained in command of Christopher until being appointed in command of Mandate on 26 October, 1915 and then to the Ruby on 4 November and very soon thereafter, transferred to the "M" Class destroyer Nessus.[4]

Carter would command the destroyer Nessus of the Twelfth Destroyer Flotilla at the Battle of Jutland.[5]

Carter was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1916.[6]

Upon being superseded in Nessus by George H. I. Parker on 19 September, 1916, Carter took some time to convalesce from hemorrhoidal complaints. Upon his return to fitness in December, Carter was appointed in command of the destroyer Lurcher and would finish out the war in her.[7]

Post-War

Carter was appointed in command of the destroyer Shark on 27 May, 1919.[8] Carter was blamed for losing a torpedo from Shark on 19 August, 1920.

On 20 November, 1924 Carter was appointed to Pembroke, additional, for the new flotilla leader Broke. He saw her through her trials and took her to the Mediterranean. Upon her swapping roles with Malcolm there, Carter took command of Malcolm. Upon that ship reducing in March 1925, Carter was placed in charge of Detention Quarters at Devonport.[9]

Carter was placed on the Retired List at his own request with the rank of Captain on 20 February, 1930.[10]
